In 2005, the Critical Mass Health Conductors (CMHC) was launched at the 2nd African American Health Summit held in Oakland, California. The CMHC's purpose is to engage African Americans in becoming health advocates for themselves, their families and communities.
Because of her dedication to freedom, Harriet Tubman holds the position of Honorary Critical Mass Health Conductor #1 for CMHC. There are over 400 numbered Critical Mass Health Conductors and we are racing to achieve 4,650 Critical Mass Health Conductors by 2010. View the CMHC video | View the 2008 brochure |

"I was conductor of the Underground Railroad for eight years, and I can say what most conductors can't say - I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger."
Harriet Tubman, March 11, 1913 WE INVITE YOU TO BECOME A
CRITICAL MASS HEALTH CONDUCTOR As part of the Bay Area African American Health Initiative (BAAAHI), 1% of the total Bay Area population of African Americans will be recruited to become Critical Mass Health Conductors - 4,650 African Americans. This one percent will become another catalyst for change to support health and well-being in our communities. Description of BAAAHI. Critical Mass Health Conductors choose life-affirming activities on a daily basis. They express leadership in a variety of ways to promote healthy practices in our communities. Critical Mass Health Conductor's Principles. THE TRAINING JOURNEY
As in the spirit of Harriet Tubman, who took herself to freedom first, you will learn practical ways to achieve your health goals. For four months, as part of a group (called trios) you will focus on personal health goals that you choose such as more exercise, better nutrition, weight release, good mental health, less stress, better sleep, etc. Together, we give support, celebrate successes and get past our stumbling blocks. At monthly gatherings you will learn about stress management, the metabolic syndrome, and how to reduce fats and sugars. You will participate in movement activities and sample a variety of healthy foods. At the end of the training journey there is a graduation where you select your health conductor number. Thanks to Bill Pegg, HC# 203 for taking the wonderful photographs at his CMHC Graduation on May 12, 2007 and sharing the experience with us. "Harriet Tubman urges us this evening, as our patron saint, to "Keep Going!" She is bestowing on each of us, her spirit of endless effort, as she guides our hand to choose our number as critical mass health conductors. We can surely heed her call, follow her guidance, listen to her whisper in our ears, and commit ourselves to the work that is required to ensure for people of African descent, in our communities at home and abroad, extraordinary health in mind, body and spirit here on this day, December 8, 2004."
